Using the Internet to Enrich Science Teaching and Learning

We are continually seeking new ways to capture the attention of students and create active learning environments where minds are engaged and interests are nurtured. The Internet is a powerful tool for engaging minds: school groups and individual students can collaborate on projects; students can pursue individual interests, taking responsibility for gathering their own information; and everyone can communicate with peers and experts worldwide. For teachers, the Internet is an electronic gateway to learning resources and experiences otherwise unavailable; no matter how specialized an area of interest may be, there is someone on the Internet who shares the interest and has identified or developed useful resources. It is through interaction with other people, ideas, and new experiences that we all construct new knowledge, and the power of the Internet is in its capacity to enable interactions with people over great distances and link people with distant informational resources. In essence, the Internet provides a way to break out of the school walls and engage students with people and resources scattered around the world.

The full potential of the Internet as a tool for learning is still being explored, but one of the main limitations at the moment may be our imaginations. We are still gaining the experiences that will enable us to envision the possibilities. Here we offer some examples of ways in which the Internet can be used as a tool for teaching and learning science.

Eclipse Puts Tourism In New Orbit

Travel Agencies Line Up Exotic Packages For July 22 Spectacle
Every eclipse has a brighter side, trust travel agencies to know. Tour companies in India are lining up packages to cash in on the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century on July 22. You can watch the eclipse from a B737-700 soaring above the clouds in Gaya, or learn about the phenomenon from experts on the ghats of Varanasi, or fly to China, ride the Maglev, attend a workshop and then get down to business in the city of Anqing.
Cox & Kings is offering a special flight that would let enthusiasts witness the spectacle from up close for Rs 29,000

Budget Impact: Adventure Tourism Gets Booster Dose

The government's move to exempt equipment used in water and snow sports such as surf boats, snow skis and inflatable rafts from customs duty is expected to bring prices for rafting and skiing down by 15-20% and boost adventure tourism in the country. The number of adventure tourists have continued to grow in the last few months in spite of economic slowdown.
"Initially there was 30-35% custom duty on water sports and ski equipment. The government's move to give a complete waiver from customs duty would bring down our cost of operation by about 15%. This will definitely be passed on to tourists," Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) president Tejvir Singh Anand said.
The tourism ministry was pitching for removal of import duty on adventure sports related equipment in the Union budget announced on Monday

It may be a little country, but it is a lovely one, so it is sad that Belgium is often overlooked when travellers plan a trip to Europe. Tucked between the desirable and obvious destinations of London, Paris and Amsterdam, Belgium is usually treated as a stepping stone to the English Channel, or, at most, a quick stop-over for a look-see in the capital, Brussels.

Gulliver's Travels

Gulliver's Travels (1726, amended 1735) is both a satire on human nature and a parody of the "travellers' tales" literary sub-genre. It is his most celebrated work and one of the indisputable classics of the English language. The book became tremendously popular as soon as it was published (John Gay stated that "From the highest to the lowest it is universally read, from the Cabinet-council to the Nursery" [1]) and it is likely that it has never been out of print since then. George Orwell declared it to be among the six most indispensable books in world literature, and it is claimed the inspiration for Gulliver came from the sleeping giant profile of the Cavehill in Belfast.— Excerpted from Gulliver's Travels on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. one or more chapters are available in a spoken word format.

HTC Working on Excalibur Replacement - Cavalier Due in Early 2007

HTC has an update to the popular Excalibur in the works, and it's set for an early release in 2007 - and by early I'm talking about end of January. This new Smartphone is codenamed "Cavalier" and has some very impressive specifications. As a matter of reference, you can consider the update to be the same kind of update Samsung did from the i320 to the newly released i607. The Cavalier will be the first HTC Smartphone to sport something other than the typical 200MHz CPU. Instead, HTC has loaded it up with a 400MHz Samsung CPU! Can you say fast? If that wasn't reason enough to be excited, then I'm sure the Quad-Band (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) with UMTS (2100/850/1900), HSDPA and WiFi 802.11b/g will get your attention. No? Ok, how about 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, 2.4 inch 320x240 screen, 2 mega-pixel camera, and a 1050mAh battery all packed into a package that's just a little larger than the Excalibur. We don't have a picture of the device, but from what we've been told it's very much the same as the Excalibur.

HTC Athena (X7500)

Though the sources are being questioned, multiple sites report that pictures released yesterday are in fact of the HTC Athena (X7500). This would reportedly be similar in specs to the HTC TyTN, but a move towards the UMPC form factor. Images released all appear to have a screenshot of WM5 crudely pasted over the screen area, so the evidence is not entirely convincing yet. More pictures at the link below.

HTC Kaiser passes FCC

Everybody's favorite king of all mobiles, the HTC Kaiser, has been swept out the door after its trials with the FCC. Interestingly, we peeped three flavors of the handset: KAIS100, KAIS110, and the KAIS120 -- we saw similar variants for the Hermes. Could one of these models end up as an AT&T forward facing camera-less handset a la 8525? Perhaps the rumored AT&T 8925 -- yeah, we're stretching here. Another sticky point found is that the confidentiality agreement covering user manual and pictures doesn't expire until the 8th of September, hardly a reasonable date for an July August launch there, HTC. Regardless of the what or the when, we know it's now on the home straight and all we can do is twiddle our thumbs until HTC makes its move and gives us a solid date.

HTC Cavalier officially the S630

The HTC Cavalier has arrived and can be had online for only $565 dollars -- yeah we're with ya, that's a bit steep. This is an ideal handset to replace an aging BlackJack and we -- and we're sure many of you -- hope it gets comfy in AT&T's stable in the coming months. If you just can't wait, kick that old nasty Excalibur to the curb and hit up the Expansys site before they're gone.

HTC Omni and HSUPA

From Engadget Mobile:

If GPS, a wide VGA display, and mere HSDPA weren't enough to get tongues a-waggin' for HTC's long-overdue Universal successor, it looks like the Omni will be throwing in a few additional goodies to sweeten the pot for its supposed October launch. Notably, pdadb.net sez that the Omni will be rocking a full HSPA implementation -- that's HSDPA plus HSUPA for the lay folk -- plus a 3.1 megapixel cam and LED (what, no xenon?) flash. If we had our druthers, we'd like to see a 5 megapixel autofocus behemoth in there, but you know, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

WM6 HTC Mogul hits the streets with Sprint

Known as the Titan, the PPC-6800, and the XV6800 in its various forms, Sprint's Mogul from HTC represents arguably the most anticipated piece of CDMA hardware so far this year. Why? Well, for starters, its direct predecessor -- the PPC-6700 "Apache" -- isn't getting any younger. Don't get us wrong, the PPC-6700 was a well-loved device that held its own for a good long while, but let's be honest: aerial antennas and Windows Mobile 5 are getting a little passé

Highlights Of Visiting Himachal Pradesh

The North Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is one of those places where many visitors end up spending much longer than they intended. Most tourists visit the Kullu and Parvati Valleys, but there are less-explored areas such as Lahaul and Spiti behind some of the world’s highest motorable mountain passes.

Scenic Routes In The Himalayas

Surrounded by forest-covered hills and Himalayan mountain tops, the Kullu and Parvati Valleys are some of the most beautiful parts of India. Many tourists come here for trekking, mountain cycling, rafting and fishing, although many are happy to just sit back and admire the gorgeous scenery.

Himachal Pradesh is a great area to explore bymotorbike, and there are some excellent bike routes around the mountains and valleys. Some of the world’s highest motorable mountain passes are in Himachal: Rohtang La (3978 m) is a favourite day-trip destination for Indian tourists staying in Manali, and the more remote and higher Baralacha La (4950m) is further on the way fromManali to Leh.

Himalayan Hill Stations

Backpackers used arrive in the town of Manali and stay for months, doing as little as possible. These days Manali is also a busy holiday destination for Indian tourists who mainly stay in the new part of town, whereas Old Manali is still more of a backpacker area and thus cheaper and more laid-back.

With good restaurants and a view of the Himalayas from the balcony of a cosy guesthouse, many visitors extend their stay in Manali, at least until they move on to the other backpacker centre, McLeod Ganj. Close to Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj is where the Tibetan Government in Exile holds its headquarters, and here is also the residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

Shimla was the summer capital of British India and is now a popular hill station to retreat to in the heat of the summer, as well as a honeymoon destination for Indian couples.

Exploring Lahaul And Spiti

Much less visited than the traveller areas of Manali and McLeodGanj is the district of Lahaul and Spiti, towards the border between India and Tibet. Stunning scenery, inhabitable looking high-altitude desert, high mountains and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries make this area a great destination for trekking as well as formotorbike trips. Permits are required to visit some of these areas and must be arranged before travelling.

Planning A Trip To The Himalayas

When to visit Himachal Pradesh depends on which areas one is visiting. Some hill stations, such as Dharamsala, get heavy rainfall during the monsoon, whereas some of the high altitude desert in Lahaul and Spiti does not get much rain at all. Some roads are not open during winter. To avoid the winter and the monsoon, most visitors come to Himachal Pradesh between April and June.

Alcon’s First Quarter Net Earnings Rose 38.5% on 14.2% Sales Increase

Alcon, Inc. (NYSE: ACL) reported global sales of $807.1 million for the first quarter of 2003, an increase of 14.2 percent over global sales in the first quarter of 2002, or 10.5 percent excluding the impact of foreign exchange fluctuations. Net earnings for the first quarter of 2003 increased 38.5 percent to $130.2 million, or $0.42 per share on a diluted basis, compared to $94.0 million, or $0.33 per share on a diluted basis for the first quarter of 2002.

At the time of its initial public offering in March 2002, Alcon permitted employees to convert their balances in a pre-existing employee deferred compensation plan into new restricted common shares with stock options. This conversion resulted in the issuance of approximately 2.2 million restricted shares and a one-time, after-tax charge to net earnings of $14.2 million in the first quarter of 2002. Adjusting for this non-recurring charge, Alcon’s proforma net earnings for the first quarter of 2002 would have been $108.2 million. Net earnings for the first quarter of 2003 would have increased 20.3 percent compared to first quarter 2002 proforma net earnings.

Gross profit for the first quarter of 2003 was $553.8 million, or 68.6 percent of sales, compared to $496.1 million, or 70.2 percent of sales, in the prior year period. Gross profit margin declined mainly due to variations in geographical and product sales mix, startup costs for the Infiniti™ vision system and LADARWave® diagnostic device and the impact of currency fluctuations on cost of goods sold as product flows through internal distribution channels.

Selling, General and Administrative expenses were $264.2 million, or 32.7 percent of sales, for the first quarter of 2003, compared to $252.4 million, or 35.7 percent of sales, for the first quarter of 2002. SG&A expenses in the first quarter of 2003 included costs associated with an increase in the U.S. pharmaceutical sales force, while the previous year’s first quarter included no costs related to this expansion. After adjusting first quarter 2002 SG&A expenses for $12.6 million of the total pre-tax charge associated with changes to an employee deferred compensation plan, SG&A expenses as a percent of sales in the first quarter of 2003 declined 1.2 percentage points. This occurred because Alcon continued to take advantage of operating efficiencies gained from its established global infrastructure.

The Red Fort of Agra, World Heritage Site Read more: http://india-travel.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_red_fort_of_agra_world_heritage_site#ixzz0KqLOVF

Named after its glowing sandstone ramparts, the Red Fort of Agra follows the original contour of the Yamuna river, just 2.5 km from theTaj Mahaland a World Heritage site in its own right.

When the great Mughal Emperors made Agra their capital in the 16th century, India’s most important fortress became seat of government, royal city and strategic stronghold all in one. Art and commerce flourished, initiating a golden age which lasted for several generations.

Akbar the Great, RedFortAgra

Ascending the throne at the age of 14, Akbar the Great soon proved an enlightened ruler. His policy of conciliation towards Hindu chiefs and commoners ensured loyalty and growing prosperity, filling the Treasury’s coffers beyond expectations.

In 1565, he set upon rebuilding the fort so it would be worthy of his empire. The work took eight years to complete, majestic ramparts, sturdy gates and some 500 buildings. The walls still stand but little remains of the early buildings, except the red sandstone palace built for his son Jahangir in a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles, later remodeled. An upmarket bazaar was set up for the harem and a grape garden laid with Kashmir soil.

Travelling in India in The Hot Season

The hot season in India lasts from March until the South-Western monsoon starts from Kerala in June. During the month of May temperatures in many places regularly rise over 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Even when the monsoon rains make their way across the country from the south-western coast, the climate stays hot and humid for a while before cooling down. Delhi can be a very uncomfortable place to arrive to at this time of the year, with temperatures often reaching 45 degrees Celsius in June. This is the time to retreat to India’s hill stations.

Hill Stations InNorth India

Shimla, in the state ofHimachal Pradesh, used to be the summer capital of the British Raj. These days it is a popular summer holiday destination for Indian tourists, especially honeymooners. The famous narrow gauge railway called Toy Train is a popular way to arrive to Shimla while taking a look at the mountain views.

Another Himachal Pradesh hill station is Manali, always a favourite with backpackers. It gets relatively busy in the summer season, but there are beautiful areas to explore nearby in the Kullu and Parvati valleys. There is also trekking, mountaineering, paragliding, rafting and mountain biking, as well as nice guesthouses for kicking back and admiring at the Himalayas.

Hill Stations InSouth India

Ootyin Tamil Nadu is very popular with Indian tourists in the hot season. At 2240 m altitude it has a pleasant climate even in the summer, and is surrounded by tea plantations, forests and the Nilgiri Mountains. Other hill stations in the nearby area are Coonoor, Kotagiri and Kodaikanal.

The area ofCoorgin Karnataka is famous for its coffee plantations as well as trekking, and is a great place to escape the South Indian summer heat.

In Kerala the summer season brings unbearably hot weather to the beaches, but cooler climates can be found in Munnar, a pretty hill station in the middle of tea plantations in the forest-covered Western Ghats. The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is another good option, even though it doesn’t get quite as cool here as in the hill stations of North India.

DarjeelingAndSikkim

Darjeeling in the North-East of India is yet another hill station established by the British, best known for those famous tea plantations and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train). From Darjeeling it is easy to continue to Sikkim to explore this part of the Himalayas. Sikkim has Buddhist monasteries, beautiful mountain views, lots of trekking options as well as mountain biking and river rafting. Foreigners need a permit to visit Sikkim.

Holy Cities Haridwar And Varanasi

The city of Haridwar in the foothills of the Himalayas, in the state of Uttaranchal, is where the river Ganges emerges from the mountains and flows to the North Indian plains. Haridwar attracts crowds of Hindu pilgrims, and is the venue for the famous Kumbh Mela festival in 2010.

Further down the Ganges, in the sacred city of Varanasi (Benares), crowds of pilgrims bathe on the ghats by the river every day, while crowds of tourists take photos of them from a river boat. But even though it is a major tourist attraction, Varanasi remains one of Hinduism’s holiest cities. There are several fascinating temples here as well as places to learn about Hinduism, yoga and meditation. Varanasi is also an auspicious place to die, and cremations are performed daily at the burning ghats.

Bodhgaya And Buddha’s Enlightenment

Bodhgaya in Bihar, one of the poorest states in India, is where Gautama Buddha reached enlightenment while sitting under the Bodhi tree. For Buddhists, Bodhgaya is one of the most important pilgrimage sites. The Mahabodhi Temple now stands at the site where the Buddha was sitting in meditation when becoming enlightened. The tree that grows inside the temple complex is said to originate from the Bodhi tree the Buddha was sitting under at the time.

TheGoldenTempleInAmritsar

The Golden Temple in Amritsar, in the state of Punjab, is the holiest place for Sikhs, who form the world's fifth largest religion. Most Sikhs visit the temple, called Harimandir Sahib, at least once in their lives. Here is also kept Sikhism's holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. Verses are continuously sung from the book in thegurudwara(temple). Unlike some religious sites in India, the Golden Temple is open to visitors of all religions, men and women alike. The atmosphere inside the temple is incredibly peaceful, especially when compared to the city of Amritsar outside.

Temples, Ashrams And Gurus

South India is filled with important Hindu temples, from the enormous Shri Meenakshi temple in the city of Madurai to the Shiva and Vishnu temples in Kanchipuram and Hindu pilgrim destinations such as Rameshwaram. Read more about South India’s famous templeshere. American Railcar Industries, Inc. (ARI or the Company) ARII today reported its first quarter 2009 financial results.

“Despite the impact of a weak economy on the freight railcar market, we shipped 1,491 railcars in the first quarter of 2009. Travelling In India During Monsoon Is It Possible to Holiday In India in the Rainy Season? Read more: http://india-travel.suite101.com/article.cfm/tr

There are two monsoons in India: the southwest monsoon and the northeast monsoon. The southwest monsoon lasts from June to September, whereas the northeast monsoon brings rain to the southeast and eastern parts of the country from October to December. The monsoon brings much needed rain to many areas in India, but heavy rains and floods kill hundreds of people every year, destroy crops and spread disease.

When Does It Rain InIndia?

The southwest monsoon begins from the Keralan coast in early June – the exact date is predicted every year - and makes its way across the country, usually covering most of India by mid-July. The southwest monsoon finishes by October. The northeast monsoon, however, brings rain mainly to the southeast and eastern coast of India from October to December. Climate change may affect traditional monsoon patterns.

Where To Go InIndiaDuring Monsoon?

Monsoon does not necessarily mean that it rains all the time every day. In some parts of India it rains just a couple of hours every day, while some areas, such as Darjeeling and Sikkim in India’s northeast, get very heavy rain.

Earnings positively affected by weakening Canadian dollar

QUEBEC CITY, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering Inc. (NASDAQ: EXFO, TSX: EXF) announced today that GAAP net earnings will finish above its forecasted range mainly due to the weakness of the Canadian dollar in the first quarter ended Nov. 30, 2008.

The Philippine’s dominant telecoms operator Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) reported a 3% rise in net earnings in 2006 to PHP35.1 billion (USD721.2 million), up from PHP34.1 billion in 2005, as the country’s maturing market showed signs of slowing growth. EBITDA - Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization

EBITDA—which stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization—came into wide use among private capital firms calculating what to pay for a business.

The private capital firms that originally employed EBITDA as a useful valuation tool removed interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization from their earnings calculations in order to replace them with their own presumably more precise numbers:

- They removed Taxes and Interest because they wanted to substitute their own tax-rate calculations and the financing costs they expected under a new capital structure.

- Amortization was excluded because it measured the cost of intangible assets acquired in some earlier period, including goodwill, rather than any current expenditure of cash.

- Depreciation, an indirect and backward-looking measure of capital expenditure, was excluded and replaced with an estimate of future capital expenditure.

Later, many public companies, analysts and journalists have urged investors to also use EBITDA as a measure of the cash public companies generate. EBITDA is often compared to cash flow because it rightfully adds back to net income two major expense categories that have no impact on cash: depreciation and amortization.
