BANK OF EAST ASIA 2008 NET PROFIT PLUNGES 98%

HONG KONG - Bank of East Asia (BEA) (SEHK:0023), a major bank in Hong Kong, announced Tuesday that its profit after taxation stood at 104 million HK dollars (US$13.4 million) for 2008, 97.5 per cent lower than the 4,221 million HK dollars reported in 2007.

Basic earnings per share stood at 0.02 HK dollars, compared with 2.65 HK dollars per share in 2007. Return on average assets and return on average equity were 0.01 per cent and 0.12 per cent, respectively, for the year, said BEA in a statement.
