Tourism earnings up 24% at $394M

MANILA, Philippines -- Earnings from tourism rose 24.2 percent to $394.04 million in January from $317.19 million a year earlier, the Department of Tourism reported.

Koreans remained the biggest group of foreign visitors last month, numbering 69,522, about 23.7 percent of the month’s 293,803 tourist arrivals, department data show.

Each visitor spent an average of $1,181 in the country, on an average stay of about 16 days.

Americans numbered 58,468 (19.9 percent of total), Japanese 34,432 (11.7 percent), and mainland Chinese 13,691 (4.7 percent).

By region, tourists from East Asia made up 45.7 percent or 134,347, while the North Americans accounted for 69,636 or 23.7 percent. From member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations came 10,083, or 6.5 percent of the total. From Australasia and the Pacific were 14,854, or 5.1 percent, and from Northern Europe 13,125, or 4.5 percent.
